About Me
My name is Cami Cox, I graduated in 2016. When I started this project I was an Ambassador in Girl Scouts. I was a Girl Scout for 12 years!
When I was in first grade, I was diagnosed with dyslexia. Per one of my accommodations, I went to dyslexia class everyday. In this class I learned how to decode words. These strategies allowed me to better understand what I was reading, how to spell words, and how to figure out what an unfamiliar words mean.
One day in fifth grade, I asked my dyslexia teacher, Ms. K, if I could bring my friends to class so that they could learn what it was like for me. That was not allowed, but this was the beginning of my dyslexia simulation.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. It is the equivalent to the Eagle Scout Award for Boy Scouts. The Gold Award requires eighty hours of community service with one organization. It also must be sustainable, which means it needs to last and continue for many years. For my Gold Award, I created this dyslexia simulation for fourth and firth grade students. The goal is, after going through the simulation, students will have a better understanding of dyslexia and what it feels like to be dyslexic. This will hopefully change the way they treat their dyslexic peers.
